Belay On: Deaf Dog Safety

In rock climbing there's an incredibly important question all climbers ask their partners before they ascend a wall: "On belay?" The climber is asking her partner, are you clipped in, anchored down, is your harness solid, do you have the rope, am I safe in your hands if I should fall? When her partner is all good to go, the answer is "belay on"--you are safe in my hands, "Climb on."

Trooper's one month anniversary of being found rolled by so quickly I didn't notice 'til three days after. It came; it went. We are here. The honeymoon is over. The lost dog became the found dog, the new dog, our dog, and now just Trooper: little guy. Also, Trooper, stop barking! Stop pulling! Come here! Which is an absurd conversation to have with a deaf dog, but that's another post.

Trooper, thy name is mischief.

So, we are comfortable, settling in, and that's about the time someone (me) might get laxed, not close the door "for just a second while I grab something", or look away at birds, clouds, my thoughts, while Trooper goes left and I find him to my right. It's exactly the time I should be ready, aware, "belay on" when I'm "off belay".

I admit I am the last person prepared for much of anything. Thinking too far ahead just causes me panic. Today, is about all I've got room for, but making sure Trooper, the little deaf dog--who blends in with the leafy scenery--does not vanish because I'm not paying attention, is a today issue, every single day.

Things that help & they might help you too:

1) Trooper wears his collar always with 3 different phone numbers on two tags. (Tomorrow he's getting chipped). Zephyr too.

Zephyr, lounging in the yard, has escaped many times. He's got tags galore.

2) Two dogs, two leashes, coffee, dog bags, purse, hat, gloves--leads to "holy, crap! I dropped a leash!" so Trooper is always clipped in. If I swap leashes on him, it's "clip in, then clip out" in my head--rock climbing rule #2. So, if I drop his leash, and I have, he's clipped into my belt with a carabiner.

3) Unless we are in the park, Trooper stays on a short leash. I love the extend-o-leashes, but on a narrow sidewalk they are too difficult to retract in a hurry.

4) Trooper pretty much always wears his little orange vest. Escape artist is his middle name. He still yearns to hit the road a dozen times a day. If that should happen--god forbid--he's a lot easier to spot looking like a safety cone.

5) Eyes open and alert is the best recipe for any dog walk. From my experience, something will always happen, something you could never see coming--Zephyr running into a coyote warren in the bushes, Zephyr getting body slammed by the owner of a dog who attacked him, Shadow falling out the jeep window as I braked, Zephyr hitting the dash board for the same reason. Car harnesses, harnesses, harnesses. Live and learn.

I am learning to be prepared the very best I can. I adore my dogs. I don't want anything, ever, to happen to them. Life is happening all around us! Belay on!

Miriam Haskell Earrings: The Family Theatrics

I finally sold the Miriam Haskell earrings, and I am truly pleased. It turns out they are gift for some one's daughter, how lovely. I could not resist adding this "family tale" in the package. Spectacular stories such as this one, really should be passed on with them. :-)

"Dear C,
I wanted to share this small bit of flamboyant history about the earrings, just in case it might interest you.

The Miriam Haskell earrings were a gift to my very elegant grandmother from her very handsome, but sly & swarthy 2nd husband, a “tycoon” of sorts from Los Angeles. They met in Hawaii in the late 50s and dazzled her off her after she had fled her forlorn life, a mere year after losing her first husband.

He was incredibly handsome, but a terrible cad. My grandmother, years later, told me a story that as a young man in high school, he was friends with the famous writer Lillian Hellman. The two of them, each with their own vehicle--one a Rolls-Royce, the other a fire truck raced each other to school.

I have no idea if the story is true or not, but I have always remembered it, and it is quite a tale to remember.

Enjoy the earrings. They have been tucked away in my jewelry box for over 25 years. ;-)

Nap Time

From the very beginning, little guy (Trooper) has been a good napper. And I am all for dog naps. Sometimes, it's the only way I get any work done. Amen.

Coming home from Nana's for Christmas in the jeep. Seven people, four dogs, food, running around the house, dog walks, and one last stop at Machado's apple orchard for pie and one last pee break walk on the way home. Zzzzz.

Fresh out of a bath, and a blow dry; not so much a nap as me burying him in blankets for warmth. Still, sleep came soon.

He woke up just as I was going in for this shot. He may not hear but he knows.

Today, a blustery sunny day, we walked several miles along the river. We took the low trail, along the water, through the Cottonwood trees on damp grown, over down branches, through dense grass up along the trail. Trooper followed along and worked to keep up with Zephyr, the trail leader, who waits, patiently for us. Now, crashed out by my computer in the sunny window. Sweet dreams, little guy.

Scout and Rescue

If you haven't been around--or if I haven't been advertising enough--most likely the later, I have a second shop now, Scout and Rescue, vintage home decor, kitchenware, garden paraphinella. It's mostly a great excuse for me to buy a different variety of vintage--I do love kitchenware--that doesn't really blend in well with the cute shoes and flowy scarves at Dahlila Found. So, check it out!

Meanwhile, who are the couple in the photo, you're asking? These two very, very young cuties are my parents, years before they had me, years before they were even married. Age: 15-16, I think.

I ADORE this photo, so it's my shop picture. Because, in the grand scheme of things, my family, all of us, together or separately, our motto could easily be: scout and/or rescue. ;-)

p.s. Dad loved to fly fish. Motto: eat what you catch or release them back to the river. Yay, dad.

Where Did the Vintage Go?

So sorry. You came here for vintage and lately all you're seeing is this furry little dog. What's up?

Well, my regular life blog over on WebPress was botching up. I couldn't add the Chip In donation button, so I had to bring it all over here. If you love dogs, that may be great, but if you're looking for vintage, I'm so sorry. Sometimes, life just throws stuff at you and you have to work with it, or play with it. Or, bring it home and love it to pieces, like I've done with little guy--oh, er, Trooper, his new name. :-)

In the meantime, here. Look at the pretty vintage jewelry. It's rare, beautiful, expensive, and I found it in my granny's train trunk.

Say, ooh, aah. And I'll find you some more bobbles to look at again very soon.

Lost Dog, Found Dog: 3 Weeks In

I have a dog...another dog, a second dog. I have TWO DOGS.

Sometimes, I still can't believe he is a dog, but it's been three weeks and so much has happened since that very dark, cold night on December 6th. If you haven't heard, while out walking Zephyr, I found this animal scurrying down a leafy gutter.

I took this photo (above) the day after I found "the lost dog" states the .jpg title on this photo. He was headed for the pound--says me. Uh-huh, sure.

This is "the little guy" (above) one week later...

I was just "fostering him" and (below) keeping up with Zephyr through the leaves. Zephyr's been a great sport about this fostering business, because it's not forever, right?

And two weeks later...coming back from mom's in the foothills, stopping to get apple pie and take a walk in the orchard at Machados, my favorite road stop.

Going for broke in the orchard. The little guy was getting healthier and a lot faster. Now, dad calls him Zippy, but I still haven't found a name.

And by week two and a half, I was the only one who wasn't clear where little guy was living for good. Below, showing off his "night-walking jacket". Seriously, I wish it glowed and had blinkers.

This is the dog the vet dubbed "aggressive and unadoptable" making quick friends with a big shepherd at the dog park. We later learn little guy is completely deaf.

Zephyr, bless his patient heart, has put up with little guy even when he wants to run and hide from him.

Eventually, I gave in.

Zephyr is giving in.

Even my parents, friends and neighbors have given in. ;-)

And what an adventure one turn of the night has taken us: Little guy has been to FOUR vets, has been medicated, diagnosed, poked, prodded, washed more times in three weeks than Zephyr has in the last year. He's visited two pet stores, has two coats, rides in the jeep, in the basket, out of the basket, in my arms. He's been in Starbucks--and kicked out of Starbucks (nicely) and has been warmly welcomed in by family at Christmas, even when he peed on the floor, a few times.

Week three...23 days later, this is our family.

And, although we have tried out dozens of names--Possum, Scout, Rusty, RuDolpho, Ugg--what my step-father calls him, Zippy--what my dad calls him, Gutter--what the guy at the SPCA named him, Butterscotch, Domino, my nieces great finds, I have FINALLY come up with a name that is sticky: Trooper.

Trooper is what my dad called me when I was a kid, if I helped stack the wood, shovel the deck, kept up on a hike. It's what little guy does every day to keep up with Zephyr.

I will continue to call him little guy, but now, instead of "lost dog" on the vet papers, it will state clearly, Trooper.

Dad Christmas

Dad & I have a ritual, we meet for coffee Christmas morning at Espresso Metro--traditionally the only coffee house open in our neighborhood. We know the owner, who brings her kids. All the regulars show up. My ex works there--I asked him if I could wish the anarchist a Merry Christmas, he obliged. :)

The sun was straining through the fog all morning but it cleared enough that we could take our coffee to the park across the street--We have our glass mugs, plate of coissants and cream cheese baguettes.

We have a no-presents pack and usually I'm the one to break it, but we agreed little guy was Christmas this year. Dad, however, surprised me with a Starbucks card (!). "It isn't a present," he said. "It's maintenance." I laughed, because, as you know, it's exactly what I needed. Thank you, dad. Coffee's on me!

Zephyr hates it immensely, but I put his red sweater on for the occassion. They're staring at little guy with curiosity, still.

A Vintage Family Christmas

Folks on Twitter are posting #childhoodchristmas and I had to join in. These are a few of my very favorite winter photos, growing up in the deep white snow. :-)

Dad plowing the driveway in the old scout with Boomer hanging out in the snow (note: mom was WAY better at plowing, as dad always hit the garage divider when the scout slid down our steep drive. Boom! Mom was a rocking plow gal. Also, I learned to drive in the scout).

My first, and second to last, ski race. Alpine Meadows, 1972. Dig the outfit.

No one can agree on what year this is, but I'm probably 13-15 years old. This may be the year I HAD to cut down the tree with an AXE...just me and my best friend...in a snowstorm. The axe failed. We ended with a saw. It took us HOURS. Crazy kids.

That's it for this Christmas eve. Off to the yearly family party, parents and all. Merry Christmas!

Little Guy: Dental, Earaches & Hope

So, I find this little dog and my whole life gets flipped for a loop--Zephyr's too, poor guy--but that's how life works. It's okay--or, it will be okay, or it is depending on how I look at it--the glass is half empty or half full. And people have been SO GENEROUS. I'm floored by it all, but not used to the flurry, commotion, attention, distraction, the whole EVENT of it all, I just haven't caught my breath yet.

Last night, at 3am, Zephyr and I were startled awake by little guy yowling from his box. I ran downstairs to find him all agitated. I took him outside, not much help. He was all in a dither, scratching his ears and wobbling.

I took him back to the vet today, way out in the burbs--the vet I was going to specifically for a dental overhaul CONSULTATION. Alas, 30 minutes later we had a mass ear infection diagnosis plus an extensive dental layout. We walked out with a boat load of meds: TrizUltra + Keto: ear cleaning fluid, Mometamax: a steroid, I think, Biomax: an antibiotic and Tramadol for pain. Ka-ching: $140. There goes Christmas.

Plus, the dental estimate which ranges from an absolutely easy-peasy surgery at $195 to the most extensive teeth extractions, neuter and prolonged anesthesia at a conservative $473. Please lord, pass the wine...

As the honeymoon of finding little guy wears down and the cost goes up, I am settling into my former panic--bills, bills, bills, rent, and, oh, Christmas. My niece is the only one receiving this year and I feel shitty about that. I'm having a bad-grown up moment. Then I think of my niece and how she'd give up a present for little guy because she adores him, even though she's only met him once so far.

I have to remember--over, over and over--that the universe has been incredibly generous. Strangers have donated money, kind wishes, encouragement, direction, dog treats and good comfort. I look in the mirror, again and again, repeat with shaky will: I AM BLESSED.

Big Day, Big Hearts, Big Dog Park

We had a big day. Little guy was wheezing and scratching his ears. It was time to go to the SPCA and see what help they could give us.

There, we met Bobby (cute young guy with floppy bangs who was very sweet and helpful). He named little guy, Gutter--since that's were I found him--but no. I'm not naming him Gutter. Bobby took little guy to see the vet and get some more info. on his conditions:

1) His eye is not a cataract but something called "nuclear sclerosis" similar, but not the same.

2) His teeth are bad but not so awful there's no repair bad, she believes.

3) Little guy definitely needs to be neutered, but also they don't want to do it, because of his age, he needs blood work done before hand for his own safety. Good to know.

Bobby got on the Internet and the phone--while little guy peed on his floor. Oops, again--and we may have a vet who can do the neuter and teeth for a lot less--still potentially expensive, but we will see. At least there is hope. :-)

Oh, and this: while we were standing there, a man came in to make a charitable donation. He asked about little guy? I told him, we chatted, he went back to give his donation. On his way out, he stopped handed me a TWENTY DOLLAR BILL. Merry Christmas, he said, and walked out. All I know is his name is Greg and he gets enormous generosity karma points and wings. :-)

After the SPCA visit, we needed some park time. The dogs meet another big guy and sniffed over something together.

This place is amazing, out behind the courthouse in an industrial area. You'd never know it was here unless you had a dog. Big dog side on the left; little dog side on the right. :-)

Saturday, Sunshine, River

We've had the most incredible weather this December. Grand blue skies, slightly chilly, sweater weather. Eventually, it will surely rain, but for now Mother Nature practically demands we go to the river.

Just starting out on the dunes. Little guy got a new bright orange jacket just for these wide open range occasions. Easier for me to spot and, hopefully, less likely to look a rodent, or hawk/coyote dinner.

Morning Walk, Day 8

We walked quite a ways this morning. Little guy was just about to sit down and call it quits in this photo. He was a great trooper, keeping up, but then he was done. Plop. I had to carry him home. My arms were limp by the time we arrived.

I may need one of those doggy backpacks...words no one would EVER imagine me saying. This dog is not a dog anyone would ever imagine ME having either. Big dogs, mountain dogs, herding dogs, that's me. Or, that's my illusion of me. Now I'm a woman who is homing a small fluffy lap dog, one that sits in the crook of my arm, one that wears a coat & needs a sweater.

Can you hear it? The universe is laughing and laughing. Oh well. Laugh away.

Park Morning, Found Dog, Day 7

Our daily ritual, plus one.

It's a bit more, walking two dogs--one small, one large. It's like adding a toddler to the quiet loping of two. Little guy is here, there, everywhere. He isn't impossible, just more.

We had his vet visit today, which was a lot more--more news, more worry, more expense. Little guy has a cataract, terribly bad teeth, bad skin. He's much older than originally declared, 8 to 10, perhaps more. He was declared "aggressive" after nearly biting the techs, and therefore unadoptable, leaving me sour and less hopeful.

The vet today (new to me) is very analytical, no bedside manner. She could have been talking about a car engine, not a dog. "The dog is lucky, at this point." Less hope, less hope...

My father, who I rely upon for pick-me-up fluffing, was rather dismissive, time to move on, enough of this distraction, you gave it your best, now enough is enough. (He didn't actually say these things, but his implications were loud and clear.) I prevented my mother from taking the same route. I may disconnect my phone, because really, WHY do I have to decide anything?

You know that old writing adage, "You may only be able to see as far as the glow of your headlights, but you can make the whole journey that way"? Well, that's how I feel about this. I am not going to MAKE a decision. Something will happen. I may find him a loving owner. I may keep him, the world may collapse, etc, etc. butwe can do it, live it, one day at a time. That's all I've ever got in me anyway.

I took Zephyr out on a big dog walk after it all. We went out kicked leaves in the dark, tromped under the stars, through the park, followed the glow of the tennis court lights and just were.

Back home, right now, all dogs are fed and presently sleeping. Zephyr is upstairs on my bed. Little guy is downstairs on Zephyr's bed. All. Is. Well.

The Dogs, Day 5: Trip to the River

Saturday: a gorgeous day; we needed to get out of the cardboard box and go to the river. Little guy trotted along, a real trooper. He still doesn't come, sit or stay. He won't even look up when you whistle (nope, he's not deaf), but he follows along the trail, stays around Zephyr and me. And when he wondered a bit far I ran after him, turned him around like a wind-up toy and he trotted on with us.

He does not like the water. He also does not like peanut butter (!). He does like to pee on everything.

Out cold before I even got in. Big day for a little guy that was scurrying down a gutter, covered in mud 4 days ago. Who ever saw this coming.

Lost Dog, Day 4

Grooming day got a big fail, when little adorable here, went all Kujo on the groomer. It was like watching a Grimm beast transformation. Yikes. So embarassed, I bought shampoo (oatmeal for bad skin) & a special brush and bowed out with my apologies.

I got kind of bummed, because I was so looking forward to some miraculous transformation. I may have been a bit misguided. For one, this dog is older than 6. He's old. And my fears that he's unadoptable because of that snarly incident worries me.

Still, not to give up, especially when he's living in our small apartment and he SMELLS. I gloved up and gave him a bath myself. (We'll call it number one in a continuation of baths). Surprisingly, he was a complete gem, better than Zephyr, stood very still, no whining, zero snarling. He just shook. And then my heart melted all over again and I scooped him up in my arms. (Big sucker! should be tatooed on my forehead.)

All freaked out, fresh from the bath, shaking like crazy, but fine.

I did an okay job, but I get why these little dog groomings are expensive. He's miles of long fur, all matted and he's so fragile. Brushing took a while and I gave him (us) a break. Will come back at it later. Suddenly, he looks more Pomeranian than Yorkshire. Who knows what he is.

Being very patient while I comb him. POOF. We may need some conditioner.

Little guy--or as @thejeanmartha and @writernwaiting named him Rusty or RuDolpho. Right now it's just little guy.

Nap Time

Today has been amazing. People have been sending money for the little guy's vet and grooming fund and I am floored by their generosity. FLOORED!

For a while, yesterday, I thought I was going to have to take him back to the pound. I was freaking out. I just couldn't afford to take on this little guy, even as a foster. But today, complete strangers stepped up and donated enough now that I can get him groomed--oh, does he smell, even after I gave him a bath! Plus his hair is matted, and he's SO tiny! I'm terrified to even go there. So, now he can go to the groomers--toenails too! :-)

In the jeep, he travels in the laundry basket; nap time too. :-)

Also, he's been sniffling and he's got a goopy eye. I have Zephyr to think of too. I can't have him picking up something. So, now I can take the little guy to the vet, have him checked out, get medicine, if need be.

We'll clean him up and wait to see if an owner appears. If not we'll find him a good home. I'm sure of it.

LOST DOG, DAY 3

If you haven't heard, I found another dog. Here he is, all ratty, dreadlocked & lost. Poor dude. I've been "fostering" him for a few days now because I can't bare to give him up to the pound. Zephyr (my own dog) isn't sure about all of this, but we're trying.

Right now he needs a bath, a REAL dog grooming bath, complete with nail trimming, de-dreadlocking, flea goop and, sorry, an anal glan clean-up, which apparently is a small dog thing & let's not say anything else about THAT.

The cost is $35 to get this guy to the least expensive neighborhood, reliable groomer I could find. Plus, he needs a proper small dog harness, which is all pushing my budget at the moment. Found: Booby-Trap!

I spotted the old board game box box amongst a plethora of jigsaw puzzles at the thrift store, an original Booby-Trap game by Parker Brother, 1965. I gasped & nabbed it with that exhilaration reserved for great finds like Famolare wedge heels, Spirographs, a pink Samsonite train case. :-) I slipped it into my cart with a hint of glee on my face & went on my way.

As with everything, I thought it would be a great piece for the shop. Who didn't love Booby-Trap? But EBay is surprisingly covered with them and I'm a bit relieved, because now I can keep it.

I grew up in the mountains, snowbound all winter. We kids thrilled to be outdoors, building snow forts, sledding down deadly inclines, and precariously hanging from the the second story deck rail and falling into snowbanks, but eventually we'd get cold and spend the day indoors playing board games: Clue, Masterpiece, Monopoly, Yahtzee, Battleship, Life, Stratego, Booby-trap.

I don't know where the game came from, as it was toted as a bar game, not a kid game, but we had one and I loved to play. SNAP, went the trap, as you eased the wood pieces out of their tight squeeze. It was a vintage version of Jenga or pick-up sticks, it required skill, patience and a long winter.

I think I'll take this up to my parents house and teach my niece to play. We'll make popcorn and sit around the table with the family who still loves to play board games. :-)

New Fall Finds

There's something about Fridays. They're the end of a harried work week for most, but they're the beginning of mine. On Fridays, I can't resist thrifting, as if Saturday were just to long a wait. Also, it gives me a jump start on what could disappear by the weekend.

Apparently, I'm all about fall colors, even with the temperature hovering near 9o degrees. The feel of autumn is still here. So, check out the bright fall colors coming to Dahlila Found.

From left to right:

1) a FABULOUS palm print vinyl jewelry box with orange velvet lining. It has a drawer AND a secret stash beneath the top shelf. Dreamy!
2) A handmade needlepoint throw pillow in great 70's avocado, mustard, rust, white and yellow--the back is golden brushed cord--in great condition.
3) the box heeled pumps: a bit worn but I couldn't resist the geometric toe pattern. Groovy!
4) A Princess Gardner wallet, with all the original ad slips inside. I'm pretty sure it's dead stock. Love it!
5) Lastly, a Boy Scout belt, which I'll sell with a Boy Scout bandanna I already have. Show off your inner scout! :-)

The Other Vera--Vera Bradley

Any time I have ever said Vera, I meant Neumann, famous for her floral watercolors and silk screened scarves, 1940s-80s. But recently another Vera has come to my attention, Vera Bradley.

I remember Vera Bradley purses well, I just never really noticed them before as they were for the older set, our mother's friends and their sorority sisters. Not really my look.

However, Bradley has been making a comeback, apparently, with a younger, hipper generation and I'm taking notice.

This is my first Vera Bradley purchase. a Bradley "Saddle Up" bag in the Symphony in Hue pattern. I really love it. (I caved. It's Ebay listed here).*

* Holy cow! I posted The Saddle Up bag above on Ebay & it sold in a few hours at $36. Wow. Looking for more Vera Bradleys. :-)

My second Bradley purchase came surprisingly from a family friend cleaning out her closet. She had several Bradley's. This one I can't locate a pattern name but seems to go generally by blue leaf or blue maple leaf. Also, I can't locate the design or the retired year. Do you know? ;-)

This is the Chanticleer Rooster pattern in a small duffel bag. This pattern is retired, although I don't know what year here either.

All three purses are very clean and ready to use. The Roosters and Maple Leaves are featured in the shop now. The cool hip bag is still a possible addition to my own wardrobe. If not, it will be on my Ebay auction, as it's only a 2009. Too bad! It would look fabulous in the shop.

Love these colors! Boho paisley and the interior is playful and fun. Also, I like the large metal fob on the flap. It really gives it a more modern look. Thank you Vera Bradley. Well done.

Purses & boots, Oh My

Back on the thrifting trail yesterday, I found some great accessories. Nice transition pieces from summer to fall without going overboard on orange too early.

From left to right,: 1) A beautiful fiery red bag w/black bead work & a leather strap from Christiana. (Sorry dears, I'm keeping this one for a great date night.) 2) A super soft crochet handbag w/Vera Bradly lining & a curved bamboo handle. Love it! My dad, the quintessential swap & picker, found these at a friends basement clearance. 3) A pair of 1960's cowboy boots, real leather & fancy trim. Love them! 4) An embossed leather & hand painted handbag w/a gazillion pockets for all your goodies. Southwest fabulous. 5) Lastly, another great pair of fuzzy Snowfland apres-ski boots w/a wedge heel in excellent condition.

Vintage Luggage Heaven

I was out picking up my mom at the airport today and was early, so I trudged in the 100 degree heat over to terminal A to shoot my FAVORITE installation pieces--there's actually two of them.

I have more photos. I'll try and post them later, but this was my favorite shot. It's all real, by the way, every piece is vintage--suitcases, train cases, soft cases, hat boxes. I think there's even a golf bag up there near the top.

I could sit there, sipping coffee, staring at it all day. :-)

Today's Fab Find: A Vera Belt

What a find! I've only ever seen a Vera belt on-line and only a few, but to actually find one--and a great one! It's definitely this weeks big score, and it's only Monday. :-)

Vera Neumann boho belt, heavy leather, heavy metal. A gorgeous find.

Check out that hardware! Two side metal hinges with metal rivets!

Always great with jeans, but would look stunning around a long skirt with high boots and bangled jewelry. :-)

The Smith-Corona & The Electrolux

I finally--FINALLY!--got out the big guns, the pink Smith-Corona and the Electrolux. They both needed spiffing up a bit, but they are shiny clean now and working! I. Am. Thrilled. :-)

The Smith-Corona is incredibly clean. It does need a new ribbon, but that's easily remedied. Look at those fabulous deco lines. It matches my bedroom! But alas, where would I possibly display it? Still, dreamy!

The Electrolux is so handsomely Art Deco, with the sleek sled blades, the body, the lines. It's made of solid metals & has a cloth vacuum bag (newly washed). It comes with the original cloth woven hose AND a newer version that creates a better suction. I want shag carpet, a martini and stiletto mules. A girl can vacuum in style too. :-)

Now, my only decisions is where to post them. Dahlila Found or my very new Scout and Rescue for vintage home decor? I think they will be living at the later--until, perhaps, they belong to you.

Scout and Rescue gets a banner

It isn't a complete banner yet, no type, just the photo. But oh, I love this photo. These two young cuties are my parents. Years before I was around, but no so many before they were married at the unbelievably young age of 18 and 19. Insane.

But, I hear, back then, they were a lot of fun together. Mom was a sporty girl--camping, fishing, racing around in the Austin Healey. The boys liked her. She was a trooper. I like that.

When dad saw this photo, he exclaimed: "Good god! Where did that come from?" I snickered. The family has made me the keeper of photographs, so I've got my pick of the best of them and I'm not afraid to parade them out once in a while. Amen.

Laundry Day

Estate finds have often been in hibernation for many years, sometimes decades. They need some life fluffed back into them. A good bath, a nice scrub, a soak and some airing out is a good way to spiffy up and prepare for their new life. :-)

Scarves are easy to soak in cool water with a tad of Woolite, then a cool iron. Aren't these beauties? I adore scarves.

Even these darling floppy hats from the 70's got a cool soak along with their chiffon ties. They look all shiny and ready to wear. :-)

I love laundry day. Life comes back to us all with a little soap and water. :-) These pieces will be in the shop as over the weekend. Hats first. Enjoy!

Lavender, Lilac, Purple

Whatever you call it, purple, was my favorite childhood color. I wore it whenever I could and with anything: red plaid skirt, lime green socks, purple paisley shirt. My mother was horrified. There was always a battle. She probably won. I don't remember.

I found this darling purse in a deep soft suede. I snatched it up and cradled it like a teddy bear. It's dreamy. I love it. It matches my new top. :-)

And yet, this fabulous purse is in the shop, because even thought I LOVE IT, I can't keep everything I love. I'd never Sell anything! Which wouldn't be good. Then I'd have to live in my jeep, and really, there's just not enough room for my life, let alone my purses.
Still, doesn't it look JUST DREAMY with my boho blouse & Nancy Botwin skirt? Oh, the torture.

If YOU have an outfit that can't live without this purse, I might feel better. Do you? Show me and I might sell it to you...if you can tear it from my fingers. Did I mention I love purple. :-)

Summer Allstar Sneaker Circus

I love canvas tennies in all the brands you know: Keds, Vans, Converse. I grew up with them in a plethora of colors, but I always love the basics best: red, white & blue. The more you wear them, wash them & bicycle in them, the better they get. When we were young we wrote boys names on the white bumper sides. And when they got weary we pasted them up with shoe goo.

All these great vintage tennie runners are in the shop--or on their way. My house is filled with brightly inspiring tennis shoes and NOT A SINGLE PAIR FIT ME. Sigh.

What we have: navy blue Converse All-Stars, red Converse All-stars, white Converse Jack Purcell's--SO big (men's 13) I can't find laces for them, & red canvas deck shoes (like Keds or Vans).

Thrifty Spring Finds--Some For You, Some For Me

I can never have too many sweaters. They dress up the drabbest t-shirt, add a quick lift or cover up to a top. I scored these three great sweaters, plus some accessories for ridiculously little. Some are vintage and some are not. Some are for me and some are for you. :-)

Darling pink sweater w/embroidered apple blossoms, Garnet Hill; White frilly trimmed tank top, The Gap; vintage 80's sunglasses, Faith, France; white woven floppy hat (one of my hat staples), red faux-alligator leather wallet, Abas; white Italian leather vintage wallet--mine! ( I LOVE this wallet. Organized & compact. I paid $2 for it). Total: minus hat, $11.

Light pink 100% cashmere sweater, Jones New York; Pink green plaid blouse, Old Navy; white red vintage shoulder bag, no tag. Total: $9. Yes, you read that right. The CASHMERE sweater has a pink prick moth hole in the sleeve: $3. It's almost like stealing.

Red Converse Tennies, made in USA. I love the red ones. Will be in shop soon. :-)

Cute light turquoise sweater, Christopher & Banks, white tank, The Gap, my white wallet & a dreamy soft pair of Cole Haan slipper flats. Sweater, $3. Slippers, $4.

I can't wait to wear this sweater! I love it and I also have it in pink. :-) Merona, $3. Groovy olive green vintage tote is in the shop now. And it totally works with this sweater...keep, sell, keep, sell. . . hm?

I have quite a few purses just now that work great with this sweater. Here is my latest Etienne Aigner shoulder bag in navy blue leather. Darling & in shop now. (I also have it in cranberry). Again, my white hat & wallet. I love them.

The best duo yet, with the Blackwatch tartan plaid bowling bag. Tell me this isn't spectacular!

And for the dudes--the bowling works for you too. The white Converse tennies are a size 13. In shop soon. Having trouble finding laces that long!

I'm keeping the darling swishy charcoal top by Rocker Girl. The distressed leather boho bag will be in the shop soon, although I am VERY tempted to keep it. Cute top: $3.

Yard Sale!

Every May my neighborhood has a blowout yard sale day. People stroll about on bikes, kids sell lemonade, mom's have charity bake sales. Some people drive--always a danger. The streets are all chaos. This year, I walked with my red roller basket, coffee, camera and wallet. It was perfect.

Tons of clothes and purses.

Some folks were obviously collectors, while others were just trying to get rid of last year's baby clothes.

Check out the Fiestaware. Prices too high for me, but beautiful.

My red cruiser market basket! Packed with goodies in the first half-hour.

First round, home. Above and below: Beautiful bedspread, velvet floral pillbox hat, caulander, Converse tennies, embroidered carrying case.

Below: even advertising! "Cheap, cheap, cheap...and I don't mean chicken! Rapture blowout! Sorry, cat not for sale!"

Three orange school desks--not plastic, but mod fiberglass. $10 each. Tempting but I passed.

Last round: Red and white hip bag, fuchsia Gloria Vanderbilt 80's handbag, faux Victorian parasol w/roses, pink and gold atomic serving dish.

Somewhere I was looking at a couch too, but when I went back to measure it, I couldn't find it. Just as well, it wouldn't fit in my basket. ;-)

It's Mod, Ba-by.

I spotted this wild thing and knew I had to have it before I was even sure what it was. At first glance, I thought: small dog carrier, seriously. Doesn't it look like one? It has the longest pull handle I've ever seen and it comes unlatched at one end to make it even longer! And wheels, baby. It rolls like crazy.

It has two large easy access side pockets for books, Kindle, cords, lunch.

The large center storage is for--wait for it--a bowling ball! BUT, see the base with the round ball cup? It flips over to make a flat bottom. Insta' mod-wow carry-on bag!

I'm telling you this thing has room. An extra side pocket outside the side pocket.

And lose it in an airport? No way. You can spot this shiny clear plastic covered vinyl roll-out a mile away--which, in some airports, is necessary.

The big blue wheely bag is going on sale tonight in the shop. Although I have an incredible urge to take it out to the airport and wheel it around for fun. I'm telling you it needs a small white fluffy dog popping it's head out of the center. Even a rabbit would work. :-)

Weekend Finds: best of the '60s and 70's

I stumbled upon a new shop tucked away behind a power mall. It was a sweet find. Lucky me.

A few of my weekend treasure finds:

A plush corduroy suitcase. Yes, corduroy, both sides and all around. It's insanely soft like your favorite pair of 70's bell bottom cords. A great stash for your winter sweaters or favorite books, a hideout for your cat or curl up with it and call it a pillow. :-)

These are the sweetest, daintiest leather Mary Jane's in a soft pearly champagne. Beautiful for a wedding. I actually have an evening dress that matches perfectly, but they don't fit this Cinderella. Sigh.

It kind of looks like a pizza here, but it's actually a table cloth adorn in bright yellow and orange flowers, with some avocado green leaves.

Wild 60's cocktail hour sandals with amazing faux granite rhinestones. Low sling backs named "Siren" by Magdesian. Dreamy.

Savory Scones

I may have picked the wrong night to turn on the oven (heat wave, 83 degrees today. Yuck.) but I had to make these Tomato Feta Scones by Savory Sweet Life on the Etsy blog and they are delish!

I had to make a few minor adjustments to the recipe. I didn't have garlic salt, a food processor, a baking stone or even parchment paper, but I made due and if someone doesn't take them away soon, I may eat another. I really love savory baked goods. If you have the ingredients, they're an easy to prepare treat. Great with wine or coffee. :-)

My adjustments:

1) For garlic salt I used Mrs. Dash, Original Seasoning Blend (salt free, which is good because the feta & the butter (oh, I didn't have unsalted butter either) are plenty of salty.

2) Instead of roasted red tomatoes from a fancy (read expensive) deli, I used Green Chile & Roasted Tomato Chunky Salsa from Archer Farm. Next time I want to try real roasted red peppers (I roast them straight on the gas range. Super yummy, but tomatoes, I'm not sure how that works. Experiment. You may find something better.

3) I love feta cheese so it was a must, but cheddar or Swiss would make a good substitute if you're making them for kids or someone who's not a feta fan--I can't imagine.

4) No parchment paper or baking stone, no problem, a lightly buttered baking tray worked great.

5) Mine were thicker than 1" when I flattened the dough & stickier (surely from the salsa) so I cut them into 6 pieces instead of eight. They're big, fluffy and dreamy.

6) Also, because of the size & density, I baked them for nearly 25 minutes. Check on them often.

Thank you Savory Sweet Life. This is exactly what I've been wanting.

Two days I ago I found this darling vintage green Echo scarf at the thrift. $1.49! It's chiffon and covered with darling stems of clover. What a find, and two days before Saint Patrick's Day.

Normally, I don't get too worked up about this day. I don't really like beer or parties, or crowds, which is really what today seems to be all about, but I was giddy to wear this scarf today. Too warm for my neck I tied it up in my hair--new hair cut, shorter short hair! (Oh me, & my bed head hair. It's just so ME.)

Zephyr needed in on the festive action too. I found this cute hand crocheted scarf at the thrift too, this last fall. How much do I love little thrift store finds? Z looks like he's wearing an ascot. (Don't worry, it was a photo shoot only. I wouldn't dare subject him to dog park ridicule for the sake of fashion.)

Lemons & Clover: Sunny Spring Finds

I took a big jump I've been meaning to take for a few months now. I opened a new Etsy store. I'm not ready for you to see the inside just yet. There are only a few posts and a simple banner, but once I get it all dolled up I will invite you all for the grand opening.

Part of me feels like I'm deserting Dahlila, Found--and I'm not!! (I'm telling myself this more than you.) It's a bit like having a second child: you still adore your first baby, but now she has to share the love.

Below are some great spring finds you will soon find in the new shop: bright colors, sunny yellows, grassy greens, cobalt blues. Fun for stashing cookies or planting flowers. I am going to love running this shop!

Vintage Sleuth Appreciation Day

I got an e-mail today that was a bit crass & tactless, making me a cheap offer on a piece I was selling. It sounded as if I were being offered a great favor. It's not worth what you're asking, he implied, but let me take it off your hands.

I declined.

And, I'm afraid, not without a bitter edge to my polite response.

The good news is, I stopped & considered how many people (on Etsy, on Artfire, on their own!) are trying to make a living doing what they love, selling vintage.

It Isn't New
Vintage is not for everyone. Vintage is used. GASP! Yes, dear, it's used, by someone else in another era, another lifetime, city, state, country, economic class, someone you don't know, but someone who, perhaps, had a style, a way of living, dressing, decorating that speaks to your adventurous or nostalgic tastes. Amen.

The Repair Artist
So, you turn to the people who deal in vintage. We are a curious bunch, drawn like crows to thrift shops, flea markets, church bizarres, estate sales, looking for pieces that spark our curiosity and hopefully that of our customers. We take the dusty, the tarnished, the thread worn, tossed aside for something new, and bring them back to life. We wash and scour, vacuum and iron, wax and polish, sand and hammer, repaint, realign with great fervor our visions of lost beauty.

The Visionary
But it doesn't stop there. Now we photograph it, make it appealing on a flat screen what you can not touch or hold up to the light yourself. We are painstakingly finicky about our photos too--when the lights not right or the backdrop doesn't pop, when the wind is blowing, while I'm trying to shoot scarves. Oye.

The Researcher
We measure & research--oh, the research! Because there is always something new to know, about fabric or shoe sizes, electrical wiring or antique plastics, designers, makers, logos, union labels, patent numbers, eras, wars, styles!

Then we write something pithy, alluring, pleasing and informative for each and every single piece.

The Errand Girl
There is a lot more we do too. We correspond, answer shipping questions, at dawn or midnight, for buyers in Australia or Singapore. We advertise, write thank you notes, spend more time at the post office than we would like, shop for packing tape & tissue paper and are constantly eyeing for clean boxes & bubble wrap. The list goes on.

So the next time you run into that vintage seller you know, please don't say "Are you still selling stuff on EBay?" The couch potato images, the Day's Of Our Lives marathon, the Cheetos, make me cringe. Say, instead, "How interesting! How devoted. What great finds have you uncovered? How exciting," because I assure you she is working quite hard, long hours, odd hours, between hours, or simply, most all of the time.

So, here's to you, the vintage sleuth, the thrift store enthusiast, the estate sale picker, the visionary recyclers. You rock.

I have a cold. It feels like my annual post-Christmas tonsil nightmare. I am heavy with winter. So, I am reaching for good winter thoughts. I actually have many: old black & white movies, scratchy wool blankets with a hint of moth balls that remind me of my grandmother. Long, hot, bubbly baths. :-)

Here's what I'm grateful for today:

Cream of wheat. My grandmother made it for us when we were kids with a chunk of butter, bathed in half-n-half. Today, I add nuts, cranberries and molasses. I eat it all the time.

Because I'm at home more, I'm cooking, drinking tea, making coffee and eating fruit and vegggies. The remnants fill my compost and in the spring I'll have fresh dirt. There's hundreds of worms under there all doing their work. :-)

I never drink tea, except in the winter. I keep the cupboard stocked. Chamomille and mint are my favorite.

Both my neighbors have lemon trees. One is a Meyer's, my favorite. I just plucked a calandar full. I will eat, squeeze, drizzle, soak, drink all of these before the week's out and start again. I love lemons. :-)

I leave my small tree up just for the glitter and lights. My niece found tinsel and these groovy pink plaid bulbs while we were shopping last week. I love them.

Hibernation

I just read "How do you hibernate?" on Apartment 34 and I scrambled back here to post, as the question was just meant for me--me and the bears, we've got hibernation down. This is how I hibernate aka "How I Survive Winter."

1. Down quilts, for me and Zephyr (the dog). He doesn't care so much yet, at a balmy 51 degrees at 11p.m, but he will when the wind picks up and we really feel how badly this ol' 1930's apartment is not insulated.

2. Mint/Chamomile tea. I drink coffee all day, nights are for sipping tea, while bouncing back-and-forth in socks on the floor furnace.

3. Wool blankets. Scratchy and mothball scented. They remind me of my grandmother--also, cream of wheat with raisins, walnuts and molasses. I eat it day or night all winter.

4. TCM. Turner Movie Classic is my favorite winter station. Old black and white movies, 24/7, no commercials. (Right now I don't have fancy cable and I whimper at my Twitter peeps sharing stories of Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant movies.) "Christmas in Connecticut" is my favorite Christmas movie. I watch it every winter.

5. Jig-saw puzzles are my latest winter thing. Last year I crocheted, the winter before it was Scrabble, now I scuddle tiles while watching TV. It's rather hypnotic. You should try it. :-)

6. Walking. We do this all year long, but it takes more energy in the winter, so it counts more. A long soggy wet walk begets sopped clothes, muddy boots, wet socks, Zephyr shaking in the house, towels, towels, towels, but a cleaner dog that smells like drying towels. :-)

7. Baking. I don't really like to cook, but I love to bake. Nothing fancy, just something warm, a reason to heat the stove, lick the bowl, eat dough and warm the house with bakery smells.

8. My bed. It becomes a fort, a safe haven, my nest. I stay up late, sleep in late and when the world is all sharp edges and annoyances, I declare the bed a safe zone, pile it with pillows, blankets, the dog, hot milk, my audio book (my ice pack) and close my eyes.

9. Christmas lights. I love a beautiful tree, and presents can be nice, but Christmas lights are my very favorite. Red, green, blue, yellow, pink, blinking, sparkling, snowflakes, lawn ornaments, nativity scenes, Santa, reindeer, whatever you've got I love it. Also, I think lights should stay up until Spring Solstice. Winter needs the festive brightness.

Secret Stash: Celluloid Vanity Case

It's time to take down another box from the closet, dust it off and share it with you. This case blesses the Top 5 of vintage goods I'd grab if running from a burning building. (Number one is my grandmothers leopard skin pill box hat with matching muff.)

So, without further ado, let's draw the velvet curtain. Lights. Camera. Say, "oooooooohhhhhh!"

THE ALLIGATOR LEATHER CELLULOID VANITY TRAIN CASE
I'm not certain if it's real alligator. (You can't see it well from here). The handle is also leather. I love the pointed "spades on each tip). Notice, there are TWO latches, for two separate compartments. AND the main compartment has TWO small skeleton keys and they work...

Now, look inside, "voila!" A celluloid vanity set in marbled chartreuse with light translucent gold underlay. (When the latch pops "click!" and opens, even I hold my breathe.)

From left to right: pieces of a nail file, a soap box, a shoe horn, a horse-hair brush, a hairpin box, a toothbrush box, a shoe hook. Below: a powder box (still filled with a dreamy sweet powder) and a comb.

The full bottom compartment: three stretch pockets along the bottom sides and a larger one on top. All the elastic is good and holds, the fabric is dreamy. It's okay to swoon now. I'll get the smelling salts.

I'd like to research my case a bit more. There's not a single tag on it anywhere. Nothing!

Some days, I imagine a lady of leisure carried it with her on a train, laid out on fine linen while she brushed her hair and powdered her nose. Others, I imagine a traveling salesman carried it great distances selling each celluloid piece to ladies across the country.

Red Treasure Trove

I took a little day trip out of town yesterday. Just a sunny day, coffee out, see another town, kind of day. So, of course I had to stop at the local thrift--SPCA thrift that just happened to be having a 30% off day. It was like picking cherries from the vintage tree.

Family Contraptions: The Toas-Tite Maker

Three generations of women in my family have owned Toas-Tite makers. I grew up making the delectable Toasted sandwiches dripping with melted cheese. When it snowed and I had to shovel the entire frozen deck that wrapped half way around our house I made them with tomato soup. I swear it saved my frost bitten little life.

There is no trick to it; even a kid can do it. Insert two slices of bread slathered in butter or mayonnaise and filled with cheese in the clam-like grips, tighten it, trim off the excess and put it on the stove. Flip it once, check it for bubbles. Eat!

Dinner on the burner. I had to demonstrate!

Toasty, a bit black, how I like it.

Wa-la! Insta' drippy cheese. Here: oatmeal bread and Irish cheddar cheese, but Rainbow bread and cheese slices will work in a 1960's minute.

Recently, I found this one at an estate sale and nearly squealed. They're rather rare and this one not only has the original instructions, but is pre-patent, dating it to the early 40s. Plus, it has a RED handle! (Ladies, it's the little things.)

I called mom to share. She double checked to make sure she still had hers.

"Does the cabin have one?" she asked. I thought so.

"Does Aunt G have one?" I asked. She thought so.

We double checked our mental family lists. Everyone had one. SO, if I can ungrip my toasty fingers from this lovely specimen I will actually sell it in the shop. (Don't rush me! I'm letting go.) If this ever truly happens, you can join the ranks of kitchy owners of comfort food contraptions. The Toas-tite maker. It rocks.

It doubles as a Xena Warrior breast plate. Halloween surprise?

Fall For Color

It took me many years to get over black as a daily clothing essential. When I did though, I never looked back. (Besides I have dogs. Standing in an office parking lot, sticky rolling my clothes just doesn't work for me.)

Color--BOLD color--makes such a bigger statement. Anyone can pull off black, but red? Purple? Yellow, red and purple?

A friend tells me, I'm returning to my roots. As a kid I was all about color: plaid, polka-dots--both, mixed together. My poor mother. All she wanted was a sweet little girl in patent Mary Janes and a pastel smock dress. I wanted green rainboots, orange polyester plaid, a pink t-shirt and my cowboy hat. Things haven't changed too much since then.

Petite Cafe

I was running errands downtown (ick) when I suddenly needed coffee. Not coffee-on-the-run, but an "I need to sit down and rest" coffee, so I came here to Le Petite Paris.

Just inside the right windows are three baroque couches that sink nearly to the floor. They're worn and fabulously comfortable. I sat, or sunk, drank coffee served lightly Americano in a wide brimmed cup on a saucer and listened to the muffled sounds of a French lesson playing in the background.

I could have sat there all day, sipping quietly, staring out the window, watching the people zip by, while my mind slowed down.

Some days--some moments--really demand a place to sit, quietly and, for a little while, just be.

VERA at the Beach House

Life is so funny. Sometimes what you want is right in front of your face and you don't even see it. Well, I don't anyway. Our family has a beach house that my grandfather built in the 50s. It's funky & fabulous, and our family rotates through it all summer long.

While I was there through the holiday I was searching through the linen's closet when I spotted a bright yellow and orange sticking out from the bottom pile. I knew at once. I just knew.

I got more excited than a minor striking gold. I pulled them out and was enveloped in bold butterflies! I fondled for a tag and there it was "Vera Collection, Burlington." I nearly shrieked.

All these years--all those eras!--there they sat, mostly unused, my mother later tells me--just waiting for me to discover Vintage and Vera.

So, of course, I had to share them with you. Do I keep them or sell them? There are two twin fitted & one flat sheet. They won't fit my bed. Decisions, decisions.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying just having them and knowing where they were hiding out all these years, at home. :-)

Vintage Curios: Make Your Own Art

One of the great perks of being a vintage sleuth is finding wonderful curios for my own home. I found this darling little framed flower bouquet lithograph for 50¢. Up close--very close--you can see the daisies are hand painted white for an extra pop. Beautiful.

The frame is backed with green velvet & I didn't want to peel it open. So I added my vintage buttons--still holding onto a swatch of fabric, and a poem line, "look at the stars", I once typed and tore away for this piece--right on the glass.

Some day, someone else may want to remove my additions & clean it up, hang it on their own wall. UP-cycle. :-)

Vera Neumann

Recently I asked a woman if her handmade coasters where made with vintage Vera fabric. She said, "I don't think Vera Wang makes pillow cases...." Where was I to go with that? I gasped, inside, because, really, who was I to judge her having only discovered Vera--Vera Neumann--several years before.

Trust me, this woman will never make that mistake again, as I shared what I knew with her--a pittance of what you know, perhaps. (Why is it that Vera makes us feel like we know her? Like we know her feelings when she painted such bold strokes, those delicate florals, her psychedelic swirls. A woman of many personas, she feels like us, I think, a bit of every woman.

Everyone's favorite store: Anthropologie just came out with an ode to the artist: "Vera: The Art And Life Of An Icon" (but you can buy it through Amazon for nearly half the price. Shh. It's a secret.)

I just finished posting my own Vera scarves in the shop. They look so lovely, posed, draped and well lit. I'd like to frame them up and keep them forever. Once you've found your very first Vera, there really is no going back. It's nearly an addiction, right up there with shoes and coffee.

I went out of town for the weekend and landed in a beautiful treasury on the front page of Etsy. Like the metaphor: "A watched pot never boils," the minute I stop fretting over my shop, wandering eyes appear on it. :-)

Happy Cupcake Day (or, coffee simbiosis)

I have a very simbiotic relationship with my neighborhood cafe/restaurant. I keep their enormous bowl shaped planters filled with herbs and flowers, and in return they keep me filled with coffee.

Working at home, the cafe is my daily walking destination with Zephyr. It's my social escape, my water cooler for gossip. If anyone is looking for me the cafe is usually the first place they look.

This relationship also works well for my baking habit. I like to bake, and even they, in a restaurant, like to eat. So, this year for Valentine's Day I made cup cakes slathered in cream cheese and Cointreau frosting dolloped with pink, red, lavendar M&Ms, which, since I waited to the very last possible minute to buy, were crazy hard to find.

I got a grand entrance, "Happy Valentine's Day" all around and the cupcakes were gone in less than 5 minutes. Still, it was fun. Who else would I bake this many cupcakes for? Plus, I'm thinking in the spring it will buy me bonus points as I want to add another one of their restaurants to my gardening list. I drink a LOT of coffee. ;-)

Spring Flowers

My jeep is filled with flowers. :-) I'm off to plant them at my favorite neighborhood cafe. I trade flowers for coffee. They call me "the flower girl." I've done this for nearly 4 years now. And since they pay for the flowers, it's the best trade ever. :-)

I like adding something beautiful to my neighborhood. :-)

Making Valentine's Cards

When Etsy announced they were partnering with Citymeals-OnWheels and inviting all Etsy artists to make homemade Valentine's Day cards I got as giddy as a kid on, well, Valentine's Day. :-)

I broke out the colored stamps, vintage ribbon, craft paper, yarn and glue. Etsy said, "pretend its for your sweet, sweet grandma," and I have.

I wish my own grandmothers were still alive. I would LOVE to deliver Valentine's Day cards to them--all three of them. (I actually new my great, grandmother who lived to be 98.)

Valentine's today, feels mostly for school children to share over juice, and new couples to share over dinner and wine, but there's an enormous other age category out there (in here) who deserve a Valentine's too. I am so happy to share my few cards with them.

Thank you Etsy and CityMeals-on-Wheels. This Valentine's Day will feel a little less lonely knowing I got to send a Valentine's to someone who really needed one. :-)

Shimmer {beautiful things}

I've always had a plethora of silverware in my kitchen. I don't store it; I use it. Why save the beautiful pieces for guests only? My cereal deserves a silver spoon too.

I also like mixing designs. Why settle on just one, when I can have many favorites? Silverware is like jewelry, mix it up and have fun with it. :-)

Any time I'm at an estate sale, flea market, thrft store, I pick through the silverware and I can always find a piece or two that need a new home.

I love my latest finds. They were so deep in tarnish it took me an evening of silver polish--2 sitcoms worth--to get them this shiny. My thumbs were aching but aren't they beautiful?

Some pieces will be up for sale in my shop. I don't need a place setting for 20 so I'm up for sharing. Your cereal, pasta, soup deserves a silver spoon too. :-)

Make More

I wouldn't call it a resolution so much as a coaxing towards pleasure. So busy running DahlilaFound I have left behind all my winter craftings: crocheting, sewing, making cards, creating ANYTHING, really.

I got a quick taste of this last week, when I dug out my glue gun to revamp this little curios basket. All that was on it was the green vine leafing & plastic bouquet. I clipped pieces of fabric flowers, found beads, shells & glitter and behold, made over this sweet little forgotten basket from the thrift store into something fun. And fun, really, is what crafting is all about, well, that perhaps and a tad of sanity. :-)

In case you haven't noticed, I adore hats. Love them. They add so much to an outfit and so few people wear them, it seems. I wear sunhats all summer and have a basket filled with berets, cloches and wooly beanies for winter.

Now, I'm in love with all three of these hats. Oh, to be a woman of means. ;-)

Hat Whimsy!

I don't know if it was the weather or the coffee but I had a sudden attack of hat whimsy today--and it was really fun. Normally, I dread being in front of the camera, like a dog backing away from a bath. Excuses, excuses: my chin this, my nose that, freckles, wrinkles, etc, etc. but today the sky was just so--overcast and forgiving, and my hats looked lonely in the shop, sitting atop hat stands, a bit. . . bored.

So, I grabbed my camera, swapped clothes, earrings, hats and shot them before even I could protest.

The Buttery Creme Wedding Guest: paper roses, chocolate velvet ribbon, light brown tulle netting. Without season, delicate, elegant, no tag; $28.

Below, is the sophisticated felt velour turban with abalone button and trim. I got out my old glasses and trench coat. I look urban-editor ready, $28.

Below, this hat reminds me of the story book, Madeline, all grown up, having discarded her yellow ribboned hat for grown-up gray.

Bullocks Wilshire Sportswear, $38. (hardly what I think of when someone says sportswear.)

It has a black rolled velvet button on top. It retains it whimsy.

Lastly, my favorite find: the hot pink, faux fur bucket hat. 2 1/2" wide grosgrain ribbon with enormous bow. Sparkly pink rhinetstone earrings to match. Dare I wear it in public?

PINK on Winter White

Somewhere it's snowing (although it's raining here) It's a good day to create a splashing outfit, a party frock, a look for ladies who lunch. Pink, I believe, doesn't have to be for spring only. In fact, in the midst of winter it can a refreshing change to gray and brown and black. Besides, it has all that snow as a perfectly lovely backdrop. Enjoy!

Big Green Monster

I am officially a true member of my family lineage. I know this because I scavenge for goods the way my grandfather did. We just can't resist the temptation of free. (I do have my limits. I don't want rusty fish hooks, or dock floaters or shovel handles, as he did). But when this chair appeared directly across the street from me donning a FREE I ran to it, second thoughts be damned.

The big burly tatooed moving man hauled it home and gently placed it in my backyard. I said thank you, then turned to truly look at what I had just adopted. Yikes!

This green velvet monstrosity is now known as the Big Green Monster and for the last 24 hours has been living in my garage. It has another 48, before it must vanish again. (unlike my grandfather, I don't need to keep it all. But like my father, I will sell it.)

There's a real thrill in the discovery of something different, unique, curious, fabulous. It's treasure! I am the pirate, the sleuth, the hunter looking for gold. My gold just happens to be vintage curios, accessories & house decor, but I can--and have-- fallen for a plethora of odds and ends, large and small. Some are even living--both my dogs were found. :-)

Meanwhile, I've got feelers out for help in naming this chair, because, honestly, I don't speak furniture. But I'm looking. Do you know? Tell me. The chair is on a time clock. It's headed for Craigslist, but it needs a good story, a background, some color. Not everything that is found comes w/a resume. Sometimes you have to create on for it. My relatives would be so proud. :-)
